Aujourd’hui, son nom est souvent associé aux compositeurs qu’il a transcrits, principalement pour le piano. En tant que transcripteur, il a eu de nombreux prédécesseurs, mais il est celui qui a porté à son paroxysme l’interaction entre composition, transcription et interprétation. Pour lui, le compositeur est un prophète : il organise la musique qui, préexistante, émane d’une éternelle source divine. Et puisque toute la musique préexiste déjà sous quelque forme que ce soit, la frontière entre la composition et la transcription disparaît. L’interprète ne peut jamais recréer l’œuvre dans son original et devient lui-même un transcripteur qui crée de nouvelles versions des œuvres qu’il interprète.
