Longtemps, on a préféré un autre terme : les musiciens n’interprétaient pas la musique, ils l’exécutaient. L’abandon d’un mot au profit d’un autre au milieu du xixe siècle n’est pas anodin. Il coïncide avec le renoncement des musiciens au rapport très libre qu’ils entretenaient avec la partition depuis des siècles, remplacé par une vision très stricte du rendu sonore du texte musical. Cet article propose d’explorer les conditions de ce bouleversement qui affecta aussi bien le jeu instrumental et vocal que la nature du métier de musicien ou les pratiques d’écoute. English title:From music performance to music interpretation (1780-1950) The use of the verb “to interpret” to signify the instrumentalist or singer’s activity has become so common place that today we can no longer imagine that there could have been other ways to designate, and thus to conceive of, the musical act. For a long time, it was common to speak of musical execution, as opposed to musical interpretation. Relinquishing one term for the other in the mid-19th century was in no way insignificant. In fact this coincided with musicians’ giving up of the centuries-old very free relationship they held with the score, replacing it with a very strict vision of the musical text’s sound result.
